Nixon (R), with 48.4 million votes, overwhelmingly defeats Sen. George McGovern (D-South Dakota), with 28.4 million. Nixon wins in every state except for Massachusetts and the District of Columbia, prompting the sale of bumper stickers that reads “Don’t Blame Me, I’m From Massachusetts!” In Boston, Nixon receives 70,298 votes and McGovern 139,598. Turnout is 216,548 or 71.9%.
